Australia: Kakadu NP – Cathedral Termite Mounds

Kakadu National Park is the place to see some of the most incredible termite structures in the world – the towering mounds of the cathedral termites. There’s guys built up to 6 meters / 18 feet high, a massive structure made from mud and termite saliva. The towers can last up to 60 years, withstanding all the rain, wind, and heat! Inside each one is a network of tunnels that is home to millions of termites. The ventilation system inside works like air conditioning and allows the insects to stay cool. Cathedral termites aka Nasutitermes triodiae, are native to the Northern Territories and can mostly be found in and around Kakadu. They feed on tussocks grass.
