Australia: Lone Pine Sanctuary – Wilflife
Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary was established in 1927 and is the largest in Australia and the world. Occupying 18-hectares (44-acres), it houses over 80 animal and bird species, and not just koalas. There are multiple species of kangaroos and wallabies, tree kangaroos, platypus in the nocturnal aquarium, dingo wild dogs, fresh and salt water crocs, and tons of birds – from giant cassowaries to parrots and lorikeets to the world’s largest kingfishers – kookaburras. It was in the middle of a very hot Queensland summer day, so many of the southern furrier animals were in hiding or sleeping in shadow.
