Australia: Philip Island – Penguin Parade
Philip Island is home to one of the largest blue penguin (aka little penguin) colonies in the world. Every night thousands of these little guys come ashore and walk up the rocky and bushy terrain of the shore to their homes. Watching this “penguin parade” is one of the biggest attractions in Australia, drawing huge crowds. You can watch it from the main platform, private platform closer to action, or underground viewing on an eye level with penguins (or all of the above). As the dusk falls, the first few penguins come out of the water and run past you, then a couple more, and eventually a trickle turns into a crowd running around you (occasionally stopping to clean their feathers or perhaps have a quickie sex like few did). There are about 35,000 blue penguins in the colony.
