Australia: Pine Creek – Black Flying Foxes

While normal people come to Pine Creek to visit the historic railway museum, but a much more interesting attraction here is a massive black flying fox colony. They are quite common in NT and are some of the largest bats in the world (although among other flying foxes, they are relatively small). They weigh in average 700 g and have a 1 m wingspan. They stay in huge roosts during the day, often numbering in tens of thousands, and they fly out to feed at night. They are fruits bats, flying up to 50 km a night in search of nectar from palm and eucalyptus trees.
