Baffin Island: Arctic Poppy
Arctic poppy is one of the northernmost flowers in the world, it has been found as far north at 84 degrees. It’s endemic to extreme and harsh arctic areas and is circumpolar. It is featured on the coat of arms of Nunavut. It’s a beautiful and tender flower with its yellow head following the sun just like the sunflower, tracking the sun around the sky (and it’s 24 hour sun where these flowers grow!). Interestingly, it’s mostly pollinated by a unique arctic bumblebee. Arctic poppies are considered endangered globally, but they are quite plentiful in Nunavut.
