Baffin Island: Floe Edge – On the Way to Floe Edge Camp
I came to the Arctic and Pond Inlet to go to the Floe Edge – the edge of annual sea ice that forms between the islands of Baffin and Bylot. The wide straight between the islands remains frozen almost 8-9 months a year. The trip to the Floe Edge involves snowmobiles pulling wooden sleds called Qamutiik (made mostly by tying the sled pieces with ropes as using nails would quickly come undone when driving on ice). The weather – snow and fog – delayed the start for a while. Then another bump came when one sled fell into an ice crack (I was in that one). But eventually, after 3 hours in the sled, the Floe Edge Camp was in sight.
