Baffin Island: Floe Edge – Floe Edge Camp
This is what the Floe Edge Camp looks like – sturdy mountain hardware tents set up on open sea ice, still about 2-3km from the actual ice edge (which is constantly breaking and moving in as the ice is melting). The camp is close to the uninhabited Bylot Island with the distant views of the mountains and glaciers of the Baffin Island in the distance. Snow and ice is everywhere – an incredible scenery to go hiking through and exploring the snow drifts and many cracks in the ice. Some cracks are wide open and some are refrozen or covered with snow. And while you know that the ice is mostly 2m/6ft deep, you still feel quite uneasy walking on ice with 1000ft of water below you.
