Baffin Island: Pungnirtung
Pungnirtung is another Inuit settlement deep in the Cumberland Sound Fjord and at the gates of the spectacular and hardly accessible Auyuittuq National Park. About a 1000 people reside in the community and it even has a downtown and an uptown. Old red buildings of the Hundson’s Bay whaling operations stand near the water as does a massive whaling harpoon gun that used to shoot bowhead whales straight from the shore. A couple dusty streets run across the town, broken cars adorn side streets, wind howling all around – but the panoramic views of the distant mountains are fantastic.
