Bahamas/Abacos: Abaco National Park
The Abaco National Park covers over 20 thousand acres (85 sq km) of the southern part of the Great Abaco island. All of it is pine forest, a quite unusual sight for the tropical Bahamas – this is the Caribbean pine which is thought to have gotten here from Florida about five thousand years ago. Lots of interesting flora here, as well as superb birdwatching. There are four endemic species found only on this island and mostly in this park – Bahama Yellowthroat, Bahama Warbler, Bahama Swallow and Bahama Woodstar – we saw all of them. Also here you can find the Abaco Parrot that nest and live in the pine forest – we heard them but didn’t spot any. Plus we saw several other species!, including stunning green hummingbirds up-close and personal.
