Bahamas/Abacos: Elbow Reef Lighthouse
The Elbow Reef Lighthouse is the most photographed lighthouse in Bahamas, located in the outer Elbow Cay in the Abacos island group. Built in 1864, it is still operated manually on kerosene cans is one of the only three such archaic lighthouses in the world. It requires around a gallon of kerosene per night and a lighthouse keeper has to manually crank up the light to get it to operate. The lighthouse stands at 89 ft tall and has a distinctive red-and-white candy-striped appearance, very photogenic. You can climb to the top for panoramic views of island and the boat-filled harbor and beautiful water all around.
