Bangladesh: Dhaka – Dhakeshwari Temple
Dhakeshwari Temple is the main Hindu Temple in Dhaka, dating back to 12th century. It is considered the most important Hindu place of worship in Bangladesh and is recognized as the country’s national temple. The name “Dhakeshwari” translates as “Goddess of Dhaka,” and some believe the city itself is named after the deity or the temple. The temple has undergone significant changes over time and very little from the original remains. The original 800-year-old temple was destroyed during the Bangladesh Liberation War in 1971. The temple complex was once sprawling and is now just a small area with several pink buildings.
