Bangladesh: Mathirapur Deul Temple
Wow – this was such a cool find – a 16th century temple located in Mathurapur village not far from Faridpur. It’s a type of Hindu temple called Rekha Deul – it has 12 sides and a curvilinear tower, standing about 30m tall. The structure is adorned with intricate terracotta carvings depicting Hindu mythological figures, including gods, goddesses, Hanuman, dancing figures, flowers, foliage, and horses in motion – totally stunning. You can even walk inside into a square-walled sanctum. The temple’s origins are unclear – it is speculated to have been erected by a Mughal general Man Singh to commentate a military victory.
