Belarus: Komarovka Central Market in Minsk
Central market in the heart of Minsk is a rainbow of produce – fruits, vegetables, berries and mushrooms on the open side of the market, and meat, dairy, honey on the covered market. Almost everything is locally produced, squeaky clean and tested for radiation (after all Chernbyl is only 300km to the south). Mushrooms galore, as well as wild berries – it’s the height of the foraging season. The meat section was particularly impressive – smoked and salted and all possible body parts of every possible domestic animal. At the entrance to the market – there are sculptures and fountains – this is almost a theater show rather then a place to buy your potatoes and bacon.
