Belgium: Namur – Citadel of Namur
The city of Namur is famous for its medieval citadel, sitting on the hill high above the town at the confluence of rivers Meuse and Sambre. This location was fortified even back in the Roman times, and over the centuries one of the largest fortresses in Europe was built here. It’s a twisting and winding road to get to the top where the citadel with mighty walls and ramparts sits, but the views down onto the town and the landscape around are just spectacular. The city of Namur itself is worth exploring with its beautiful buildings and churches of the old town.
