Benin: Grand Popo
Grand Popo used to be a slave trading post in colonial times but now the erosion has all but destroyed the old town leaving only a narrow strip of a sandbar with beautiful beaches and small farming and fishing communities nearby. The beach is truly spectacular here – wide open with golden sand, perhaps one of the best in West Africa, and still with zero commercial development. Sea fishing is quite interesting here – two boats go into the ocean about 1km apart and drop one huge net. Then people on shore drag this net out which takes about 2-3 hours of dragging and pulling! The fish yield is usually quite high since you cover duh a large area of the ocean.
