Bhutan: Simtokha Dzong
One of the reasons for coming to Bhutan was the remote possibility of seeing the Golden Langur in the south of the country – a very rare endangered primate. Golden langurs live only with a very small range in the south of Bhutan (and a bit in Assam in India) – in fact is the smallest range of any primate in the entire world. There are only about 4000 golden langurs in the wild, but they are well-protected and revered in Bhutan. The animals are stunning with striking golden-yellow coat and long tails. We were just hoping to maybe glimpse one or two, but instead were super lucky to spot 5 different troops then in different areas along the north-south Trongsa to Panbang road – over 40 individual all in all! Interestingly, golden langurs were only discovered and described in 1950! Needles to say we were in total awe and so lucky to observe and phonograph them!
