Bhutan: Himalayan Wild Strawberries
As we drove along the spectacular Himalayan landscapes and mountain passes, we noticed that slopes and sides of the road are covered with wild strawberries – insane amounts and density! – it’s literarily almost red. Apparently, these are Himalayan wild strawberries (Fragaria nubicola) – small edible berries native to the Himalayas. While they looks quite similar to the European ones (maybe more round and brighter), the taste is somewhat different – they are more watery and almost not sweet or flavorful (but they are fragrant). They are not really valued by locals who don’t pick them.
