Bolivia: Concepcion Mission
The Jesuit mission of Concepcion is the largest and most ornate of all the UNESCO missions of Chiquitania. It was established in 1709 and is truly stunning with its architecture and carvings, again built without a single nail. The mission’s church, Catedral de Concepción, features a single-nave design with a wooden roof and intricate facade details like Solomonic columns carved from local cedar. Interior has brilliant frescoes, wooden sculptures of saints, and altarpieces that fuse European religious art with Chiquitano patterns.
