Bolivia: Sucre – Basílica Metropolitana de Sucre
Catedral de Sucre aka Basílica Metropolitana de Sucre is the main religious site in Sucre, right on the central square – a massive structure. It was founded in 1559 and completed in 1712, making it one of the oldest cathedrals in South America. Ornate from outside with the mix of baroque and renaissance, the interior goes beyond ultra lavish – and there is also the Museo Catedralicio packed with religious art, jewels, and historical artifacts. Not to be missed is the Capilla de la Virgen de Guadalupe, which is one of the richest chapels in South America due to the jewels donated over centuries. The crown jewel is the famous Virgen de Guadalupe painting covered in precious stones and pearls, she is considered to be Bolivia’s patroness (no photography allowed).
