Bougainville: Arawa Market
The market in Arawa on the Bougainville island is absolutely spectacular and authentic – all the local selection of bizarre fruits, roots, vegetables, and greens imaginable. A large section is about betel nuts, it’s a major trade here and they are much much cheaper here then on the mainland or other islands, in fact bougainville exports betel. The buy grows here everywhere, and this is the “red smile and red spit” central. Lots of posters against violence against women hanging above the betel nut stalls.
