Brazil: Pantanal – Black-and-Golden Howler Monkeys
Black-and-gold howler monkey is a the largest monkey species in South America and endemic only to the Pantanal and surrounding areas of neighboring countries. Only the males are black, while the females and babies are yellow to orange to white (at first I even thought there were two different species here). Every morning around 5am they howl or roar – the sound that can be heard up to 5km/3mi away. These monkeys are excellent climbers and in fact spend most of their lives in the trees, rarely descending to the ground if at all. This is also the laziest monkey in the world, they spend 70% of their time sleeping.
