Brunei: Gadong Night Market
As is common in SE Asia, Brunei has a big night market with rows after rows of local dishes being cooked, juices squeezed, and bizarre fruits sold. Lots of grilled and skewered meat and fish (satay), local specialties like roti john (a Bruneian version of a burger), ambuyat (Brunei’s national food made out of sago palm powder), nasi lemaks (banana leaf wraps), and local sweet treats such as kueh malaya (pancakes with filling). A lot of it is quite spicy and not particularly appetizing looking to be honest. The fruit section is another story – lots of bizarre local fruits and an entire section dedicated to durians and jackfruits – who could have thought there is such a variety of them?
