Cabo Verde/Santo Antao: Cova Crater
Cova Crater is a crater of an extinct ancient volcano high in the central mountains of the island of Santo Antao (“Cova” actually means “crater” in Portuguese). Perfectly round and with crater walls of 400 feet high all around, it looks stunning. The crater floor has become a mini fertile valley of sorts – potatoes, corn, cashews, and many other plants are being grown in the volcanic soil. Just getting there and out is not so easy!
