Cabo Verde/Santo Antao: Grogue (rum) Distillery
The national alcoholic drink on Cavo Verde is grogue, which is essentially rum made from sugar cane with perhaps different use of molasses. On Santo Antao, there are dozen of super small batch family distillers (or more like moonshine operators), but only one still used old equipment and bulls pushing the wooden bars to crush the sugar cave to extract juice. The drink itself is 42 percent alcohol (84 proof) and tastes rather rough when not aged. 5-year aged grogue is smoother, grogue and honey is not bad either, grogue and passion fruit is even better. After the first 3-4, you can go back to raw grogue and it will taste fantastic. Almost all grogue is produced on Santo Antao island and Cabo Verde is trying to bring some to Europe.
