Cambodia: Beng Mealea
Beng Mealea isabout 40km off and away from the main temple complex area and it is awesome! Almost completely lost to the jungle, it was built at the same time as Angkor Wat and actually has similar layout – with central temples and many galleries around it. Except Beng Mealea has very little restoration and the trees and jungle have completely overgrown the ruins. You totally feel like Indian Jones looking for the Holy Grail and you likely to have the entire sprawling complex to yourself – not many tourists here at all! Actually, as it turns out, Beng Mealea’s atmospheric ruins have served as a backdrop for various movies, including some scenes from the “Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom.”
