Cameroon: Mefou Wildlife Sanctuary
Wildlife in Cameroon has it tough – the bushmeat and pet trade on one hand and forest cutting and logging on the other have decimated vast swaths of the country. Theoretically, there are various primates, including gorillas and mandrills and chimps, but seeing them in the true wild is almost impossible. But south of Yaounde there is the Mefou Wildlife Sanctuary, which was about 20 years ago to protect orphaned and illegally caught primates. Eventually, the primates are released into the wild. Here, you can see gorillas, chimpanzee and three species of monkeys – all behind a fence, but luckily not in cages. Not the most exciting experience to be honest, but still worth a look.
