Canada/Alberta: Calgary – Caesar Cocktail
No Canada recap would be full without dedicating a post to the absolute must try in Calgary – Caesar cocktail. The cocktail was invented in Calgary in 1969 by Walter Chell, a bartender at the Calgary Inn. He was inspired by the flavors of spaghetti alle vongole (spaghetti with clams) and wanted to create a drink that combined tomato and clam juices. After experimenting, he mixed Clamato (a blend of clam and tomato juices), vodka, hot sauce, and Worcestershire sauce, creating the Caesar cocktail. (So it’s somewhat similar to Bloody Mary, but the Clamato juice is a kicker, the cocktail is spicer, and the garnishes are more outlandish) The drink quickly became popular in Canada and is a Canadian classic. The ultimate Caesar in Calgary is to be had at Cleaver bar – it’s an entire meal actually, called Caesar stack – including fried chicken wing & drum, jalapeno, waffle, corndog, a full beef slider, and bacon.
