Canada/Alberta: Maligne Road – Wildlife Spotting
The Maligne Road goes from the town of Jasper to Maligne Lake, traversing spectacular mountain scenery all along the Maligne River. The Medicine Lake is roughly at the half point and is a much photographed attraction. The Maligne Lake at the end of the road is the largest lake in the Canadian Rockies. The Maligne river is fast and twisty, often doing 180 turns leaving out islands and peninsulas of spruce forest. The road is one of the best places in the Jasper National Park to spot wildlife – we saw black bears, elk, bighorn sheep, more black bears and…. even more black bear – a mother with two tiny cubs walking along the road just past our car! Priceless!
