Canada/Labrador: Zodiacing with Minke Whales in Saglek Fjord
One thing is to cruise the fjord by ship (still dwarfed by the massive mountains), and it’s a totally different experience to go zigzagging and exploring in a tiny zodiac inflatable boat. And as we were exploring the spectacular shoreline, a pair of playful minke whales came really close and put up a show hoping and swimming and playing with the zodiac (minke whales are the smallest of the baleen whales, “only” 8m/26ft long and 4-5 tons in weight). The whale couple circled the entire mouth of the Saglek Fjord, often within just a dozen meters of the coastline and even coming up within feet of one zodiac (not mine). Another insane wildlife experience! Northern minke whales – check!
