Canada/Manitoba: Brandon – Commonwealth Air Training Plan Museum
The Commonwealth Air Training Plan was effort to train pilots from Commonwealth countries – UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand during WWII. It was the largest pilot training effort ever and nearly half the commonwealth pilot flying during the war were trained through this – 130,000 aircrew be tween 1941 and 1945! The museum in Brandon in Manitoba uses one of the original hangars and displays several planes and support vehicles as well as historical memorabilia and items. Among the aircraft on display are Avro Anson (British twin-engine, multi-role aircraft), Fairchild Cornell (a trainer aircraft used for elementary flight training), Fleet Finch (a primary trainer biplane used in the early stages of pilot training), North American Harvard (an advanced trainer aircraft used to prepare pilots for combat), and Tiger Moth (a biplane used for basic flight training).
