Canada/Newfoundland: Witless Bay – Atlantic Puffins
Atlantic Puffin could just be the cutest bird out there. It’s easily distinguished from any other seabirds by its distinctive colors and a rainbow-like red and orange and black beak. The legs are also brightly red. They are often called “flying potatoes” for their chubby appearance when in flight. They nest in clifftop colonies and feed on fish, often returning from sea with beaks filled with hanging silver fish. There are plenty of puffins at the Witless Bay – the reserve contains North America’s largest Atlantic puffin colony of more than 260,000 pairs.
