Canada/Ontario: Cochrane – Polar Bear Habitat
Northern Ontario and the town of Cochran (probably as far north in Ontario you can get by a normal highway) is home to the Polar Bear Habitat dedicated to care of polar bears. These are not bears brought from the wild, but rather relocated from other zoos around the world (Toronto and Sidney) to live closer to their natural environment. It’s still hot in the summer here, but winter temps are quite polar bear friendly. These bears wouldn’t survive on their own in the wild, but they are well cared for in this small reserve, with plenty of room to room (they are somewhat overfed). The three bears they have here are Inukshuk, Ganuk and Henry. Interestingly, Cochrane is actually not that for from the real polar bear territory in the far north Ontario in the shores of Hudson Bay.
