Canada/Ontario: Wawa – Wawa Geese

The ultimate roadside monument and famous all over Canada are the statues of Canadian geese in Wawa. The name “Wawa” is derived from the Ojibwe word for “wild goose,” which is fitting given the town’s name and the prominence of the goose statue. The first statue was erected in 1960 and stands at 28 feet tall, it was built to commemorate the completion of the last link of the Trans-Canada Highway. A second statue was unveiled in 2017, made of stainless steel, was designed to withstand the elements and ensure the continuation of the beloved landmark. The statues are located not far from each other, with the current one prominently displayed at the Tourist Information Center in Wawa.
