Canada/Quebec: Ile Bonaventure – Northern Gannet Colony

Ile Bonaventure is home to one of the largest gannet colonies in the world – over 50 thousand northern gannets nest here on the eastern cliffs. The northern gannet is the largest in the gannet family at 81–110 cm (32–43 in) long, weighing 2.2–3.6 kg (4.9–7.9 lb) and having a 165–180 cm (65–71 in) wingspan. The bird colonies are jam-packed with nesting birds; from the top it appears like a checkerboard – all birds are equidistant from each other. You can see birds fly out into the open seas and return back with fish for the young.
