Canada/Saskatchewan: Grasslands National Park

Grasslands National Park is located in southwestern Saskatchewan and is one of Canada’s most unique national parks, preserving a rare and endangered prairie ecosystem, a total gem and a must-see place! It is characterized by vast open plains of prairie grasslands, rolling hills, and a diverse range of flora and fauna. The park is home to species like the black-tailed prairie dog (next post), bison, pronghorn antelope, and burrowing owls. It also features stunning landscapes such as the Frenchman River Valley and badlands. The flora was amazing – huge fields of blooming scarlet mallow, several cacti species in bloom, and endless seas of green grasses. We did get lucky to see a bison! Lots of interesting birds – like loggerhead shrike (they impale their prey on thorns and eat them), long-billed curlews, and more!
