Canada/Saskatchewan: Prince Albert NP – Cloudberries

In Prince Albert National Park we were far north into the boreal forest to see cloudberry. The cloudberry (Rubus chamaemorus) is a rare, slow-growing berry found in northern regions of Eurasia and Canada. It thrives in boggy, peat-rich soils and is prized for its amber-colored fruit, which ripens in late summer (interestingly, the unripe berries are red and pink, but the ripe ones are yellow). Cloudberries are incredibly rich in vitamin C (much more than oranges), and have a unique tart flavor, often used in jams, desserts, and traditional dishes in Scandinavian and Arctic cultures. Due to its specialized growing conditions, the cloudberry cannot be cultivated and remains a very sought-after wild berry, which we made sure to consume!
