Canada/Manitoba: Narcisse Snake Pits
The Narcisse Snake Pits should be a wonder of the world!. For only 1-2 days per year, you can witness thousands and thousands of snakes coming out of their underground pits and twisting and turning in giant groups. This is the largest concentration of snakes known in the world! The snakes are non-poisonous garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis parietali), and they hibernate underground during the harsh winter. On the first warm and sunny day in spring (usually in May), the reptiles come out en masse from underground and spend a day or two warming up (literally because they freeze in winter) and mating. It is a surreal place, where you can hold and touch and observe this natural wonder.
