Canary Islands: Vineyards of La Geria on Lanzarote
Another UNESCO World Heritage Site for vineyard landscapes of La Geria are in the center of the island. The grapes are grown here on black volcanic soil in specially dug out pits 2-3 meter deep and 4-5 meter wide called lapilli and then surrounded by circular walls if volcanic rock. This structure protects the plant from constant wind as well as directs scarce water and morning dew toward it. It’s a spectacular landscape of vines and stone circles as far as the eye can see.
