Catalonia: Barcelona – Palau Nacional & Plaza Espanya
Descending down into Barcelona city from the top of the Montjuic hill, there is the palace of Palau Nacional that houses the art museum and a grand staircase further down into the ground level of Plaza Espanya square past fountains, fake Roman columns and equally fake Venetian towers and monuments. Plaza Espanya was where the international expo was held in 1929 and a lot of monuments here date to that time. It is perhaps the main square in Barcelona where the two main avenues – Avenida Parallel and Gran Via intersect. Another point of interest here is the ornate 19th century stadium of a bullring (but the bullfights are now illegal in Barcelona).
