Catalonia: Solsona – Cathedral of Solsona

Solsona is another historic town in upper Catalonia with origins in 10th century. The centerpiece here is the massive Solsona Cathedral aka Cathedral of Santa Maria de Solsona. Continually built and enhanced throughout the ages, it’s a mix or architectural styles – a Romanesque bell tower from 12th century, Gothic dome and many central elements from 14-17th centuries, and Baroque facade from the 18th century. The interior is darks and somber and quite lavish with art and sculptures. There is also a separate chapel housing the Virgin of the Cloister, a 12th-century Romanesque statue of the Virgin Mary. The town is also great to explore – narrow cobblestone streets with overhanging balconies, and small squares.
