Ceuta: Church of Santa Maria of Africa
There is a really funky church in Ceuta (besides a large cathedral and several other big churches). The simple yellow building of the Church of Santa Maria of Africans nothing special from the outside, but inside the 17th century Portuguese-built church is a treasure trove of golden altars and frescoed ceilings and a plethora of wooden biblical figures. Each was carved from a single piece of wood and each is for some unknown reason crying. Except Jesus, he’s just carrying his cross. The legend has it that an ancient piece of olive tree was held in this church and this stick was what protected Ceuta from being sacked by Moroccan Berber armies.
