Chatham Islands: Chatham Islands Food Recap
And the final post from Chatham Islands – food recap. There is only one bar/restaurant here and a tiny cafe that makes fish and chips, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some very interesting and unique food here. Chatham Islands, located 800km from nearest land, are home to some of the best and most famous blue cod in the world. The flaky white fish comes grilled or breaded deepfried, or in salads – it’s totally awesome, fresh and flavorful. Another seafood here is the crayfish, aka cold water pacific lobster, actually the number one catch in this cold waters. But the absolutely ultimate specialty is the Black Abalone or Paua as it’s called locally. Eaten raw or sautéed or stewed these melt-in-your-mouth shellfish are tender and full of ocean flavours. In Japan, abolone cost insane money, while here I ate it with a spoon out of a big bowl. Total abolone overload!
