Chatham Islands: Splatter Rock Beach
Chatham Islands are completely off the beaten path – it’s hard to get here and the tourism is neither welcomed not supported. And yet the islands are starkly beautiful with a lot of superb natural spots and stunning beaches (none of them is swimmable however, since it’s cold and Chathams also have the highest concentration of great white sharks in the surrounding waters in the whole world). The Splatter Rock Beach on the north of the island is one of the most spectacular natural spots – white sand is mixing here with black lava that flowed into the ocean thousands of years ago. Complete desolation with not a single person in site, just beach and pastureland behind it.
