China: Gulangyu Island – Longtou Road
Gulangiu Island is not just historic mansions and great views – it’s also an insane culinary adventure along the historic Longtou Road, the pedestrian street presents an overwhelming array of street food stalls and traditional Southern Fujianese (Minnan) cuisine eateries. It’s all about seafood – the more inane the better – shellfish and crustaceans, all imaginable fish, and millions of preparations. Some of the more unique things we tried – Sipunculid Worm Jelly very famous Minnan delicacy of translucent gelatinous domes that are set using the collagen released from boiled local sandworms), Garlic and Scallion Steamed Conch, Xiamen Satay Noodles, Crab Roe Soup Dumplings, Xiamen Ginger Duck, Buddha Jumps Over the Wall Soup (an over-the-top seafood medley with abalone, sea Duck Shit Fragrance” Lemon Tea, quail eggs and more), Steamed Garlic Oysters, and more. And finally – the Duck Shit Fragrance Tea!
