China: Pingyao Ancient City
Pingyao Ancient City is one of China’s most exceptionally preserved historical sites. The 6km perimeter of ancient city walls remains remarkably intact. The main throughfare is the South Street, lined with traditional storefronts, tea houses, and boutiques, it still captures the atmosphere of a prosperous 19th-century trade hub. The City Tower, which straddles the center of the street, is one of the main attractions. The city is also very famous for its aged vinegar and there are many shops and boutiques selling that and offering samples and tasting.
