China: Pingyao – City God Temple

City God Temple (Chenghuang Miao) is one of the most significant and well-preserved sites in the city. The complex actually houses three separate temples: the City God Temple, the Caishen (God of Wealth) Temple, and the Zaojun (Kitchen God) Temple. Unlike most temples that focus on a single deity, this complex is unique because it integrates Taoist, Confucian, and local folk beliefs. The temple is famous for its blue and golden-yellow glazed roof tiles. The temple’s central halls are a feature towering statues of the City God himself, draped in heavy silk robes and surrounded by attendants. The walls are adorned with sprawling murals that detail the cosmic order. The temple dates back to 960 AD, but was fully rebuilt twice – in 1544 and 1859.
