China: Taiyuan – Zhonglou Street

Taiyuan is a large industrial city but its recently restored historic central Zhonglou Street a living museum of historic architecture and over-the-top lights and shopping experiences. Named after its iconic central bell tower, the street’s history stretches back over a thousand years to the Song Dynasty, but much of its current visual character is defined by an early 20th century architectural style of classic China. The ornate buildings are packed with top Chinese and international brands and streets are jammed with crowds.
