Christmas Island: Crab migration – Snorkeling the next day after spawning
The next day after the crab spawning – hundreds of thousands of fish descend on the shore waters to feast on the plankton of hatched eggs. It’s a surreal experience to swim in massive swarms of jack fish literally going in swirling circles around you with wide open mouths. And they are pretty big fish. And further out there are whale sharks. Only once in ten years do any crabs manage to survive – almost every year the entire spawn gets consumed by hungry fish.
