Colombia: Cartagena – Inside the City Walls
Cartagena was founded in 1553 by the Spanish and was one of the major outposts of the Spanish Empire in the Americas. The city occupies the headland above the Cartagena Bay and is a walled fortress (the modern city of Cartagena is actually several miles away at the bay and visible from the old Cartagena). Roaming the old ton cobblestone streets, you come across a lot of gems from the colonial era – Puerta Del Reloj (Clock Gate), Plaza de los Coches, Plaza de Bolívar (Bolívar’s Square), Palace of Inquisition, Plaza Santo Domingo, Cathedral of Cartagena, and so much more.
