Comoros/Moheli: Itsamia Beach Sea Turtles
The island of Moheli is a major hauling out point for sea turtles laying eggs. The Itsamia beach on the Easter side of the island is one of the most important nesting sites for green sea turtles in the western Indian Ocean. This pristine beach is also part of the Moheli Marine Park, it is a vast expanse of sand where green and occasionally hawksbill turtles come out in massive numbers. We got super lucky to see both the giant turtles laying eggs and, to our total surprise, see baby turtles come out of the sand and run toward the ocean. Absolutely in incredible! Itsamia Beach has year-round nesting of turtles, and female turtles return to the beach where they were born to lay their egg. Sadly, only about 1 in a 1000 hatchlings survive
